The population of Malta is around 450,000 people and grows by 2% annually (the country has one of Europe’s highest birth rates). The capital city is Valletta; other major cities include Birkirkara and Sliema.
Malta has a rich history and culture dating back over 2 millennia–you’ll find ancient temples scattered across its landscape as well as several UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Mdina Cathedral City & Fortifications Complexes or Ta’ Ħaġrat Temples (collectively known as Megalithic Temples).
Malta has an excellent reputation for providing quality teaching at a reasonable price, making it an attractive option for students who want to study abroad but don’t have much money to spend on their education. The country also has a well-developed higher education system that’s made up of a number of public and private universities, as well as several language schools.

Study, Work and Stay in Malta.
English is the official language of Malta, which is a member of the Commonwealth and has been an EU member since 2004. The island nation has a population of around 450,000 people and an unemployment rate that’s well below the European average.
Malta offers many opportunities for employment, with a high demand for qualified professionals in the fields of finance, technology, hospitality and healthcare. Malta is a popular destination for expats and is a great place to start a career. There are many jobs available in Malta, ranging from entry level positions to executive roles that pay well above average salaries.

Third Country Nationals (TCN) students who are studying in Malta for longer than 90 days can apply for an employment licence allowing them to work in Malta.
- Students cannot work in their first 90 days in Malta whilst attending a course
- They may only apply for an employment licence* after they have obtained a study visa for the period beyond the first 90 day study visa
- Students need a job offer and to complete the application form together with their employer
- They must continue to attend their classes – minimum of 15 hours a week
- Students can only work a maximum of 20 hours per week
- They cannot stop studying and only work using their employment licence
- If changing jobs/employer students will need to apply for a new licence* with their new employer
Visa Application.
For non-EU citizens, you do not need to apply for a student visa if the program is short and ends in three months. However, if the course you are enrolling in is more than 90 days, you need to obtain a temporary residence permit after your arrival in Malta for an extended period of time.
Students who require a Malta study Visa need to apply for the following Schengen visas. They are:
- Schengen Type D Visa: This is a long-term permit that permits a student to pursue a course that is more than three months.
- Schengen Type C Visa: this is known as the short-term permit which allows a student to study or stay for three months only. However, if you need to stay for a longer period of time, you can extend your stay by applying for temporary residence. You won’t be able to work in Malta if your stay is shorter than 90 days.
